Ladies Junior Football Championship final

Killeen/Barrowhouse 4-3 Ballyroan 2-8

WHAT a finish the crowd in Timahoe enjoyed on Saturday evening. The final minute of the ladies junior football final, Killeen/Barrowhouse are down by two points, Alice Malone gets a free on the 21 metre line, Ballyroan lined the goals with blue and navy, does she take her goal or go for what seems like the safest option of a point? If she scores the goal she’s a hero if she misses Killeen loose by two points.

In the lead up to this moment Ballyroan controlled the first half, Killeen looked like they had a very small chance of coming back into the match.

The game got off to an exciting start with Killeen missing a shot on goal and this resulted in a free out for Ballyroan. The blue and navy side used this to their advantage and worked the ball up to their end of the field and despite the efforts of Eimear Connolly in the Killeen goals Áine Delaney got her foot to the saved ball on the ground and got Ballyroan off to a dream start, raising the green flag in the second minute.

The McWey sisters, Aoife and Eimear then added a point each for Ballyroan and Siobhán Fennelly made it three in a row with a lovely point from the left. Killeen then began to attack. Maria Fitzpatrick saved Alice Malone’s shot. The corner forward came back again taking a ball on the run from Niamh McDonald and shot from right to left to put her side on the scoreboard in the 12th minute of play.

Eimear McWey had an answer for this for Ballyroan and kicked from the 35 metre line, slipping the ball into the left top corner of the net.

Ballyroan continued to take their scores, Áine Delaney and Eimear McWey built up points for their side. Killeen registered their second score of the game with a pointed free from Alice Malone. Áine Delaney was ruling the roost on the full forward line though defending and stealing from the Killeen defence, sending over 2 points before the break. The score at half-time was Ballyroan 2-8 Killeen 1-1.

After the first half being dominated by Ballyroan, Killeen took over in the second half. They came out a different team and maybe go rid of the county final nerves and the occasion. Two minutes into the second half Leona Kelly sent over a point.

Sarah Hosey then rattled the right bottom corner of the net for Killeen, to put just six points between the teams. Alice Malone converted a free.

Killeen kept on their good run of form. Leona Kelly raised the green flag in the 17th minute surrounded by a group of players. Ballyroan still hadn’t scored in the second half and Killeen weren’t letting them back into the game. Killeen full back Grace Miller burst out with the ball when Ballyroan got down to their end of the field. Killeen looked determined to win.

Ballyroan still hadn’t scored in the second half and Killeen had 2 points to make up to draw the game. The Killeen crowd got louder as the match went on. They shoot three wides. Ballyroan goal keeper, Kathy Downey coped well under the pressure. Killeen’s hopes of getting a score were fading as full-time drew closer until referee, Michael Kealy, awarded the trailing side a free in front of goals on the 21 metre line. Alice Malone stepped up to take it...

Ballyroan lined the goals with blue and navy. The corner forward took a look up. Took her shot. Rattled the net. Killeen went a point ahead. The final whistle went. Alice Malone was the hero for Killeen as they took home the silverware.

Ladies in county final

The Ladies team got off to a winning start in this years championship by beating local rivals Killeshin a closely fought match in Kileen. Although the final result of 3-09 to 1-07 might indicate an easy win this game was very close with both sides playing great football. Our girls put in a great display of attacking football with new player Niamh Mc Donald scoring 1-02 and old reliables Alice Malone , Leona Kelly and Avril Kelly all playing well. In the backs Grace Miller, Aislinn Wall and Aileen Langton were excellent and all the team contributed to this result.

Due to our first round win we went straight into the semi-finals where we met Portlaoise. Our girls got stuck into this game from the start with a blistering first 20 minutes scoring 2-04 without reply mainly orchestrated by Leona Kelly, Alice Malone and Niamh Mc Donald. Again a strong team performance never allowed Portlaoise back into the game with a goal by Stacey Farrell killing off the contest.

The Ladies will play long time rivals Ballyroan in the final on the 6th of September in Park/Ratheneska @ 5pm.This promises to be a very entertaining contest with some of the best young talent in Laois Ladies football on show with both teams playing attacking football. All support would be appreciated.

Kileen/Barrowhouse win senior B league Final

Ladies GAA: Killeen ladies grab first title
By: Síobhán Walsh

Ladies S ‘B’ L final
Kileen 2-5 R and C Gaels 1-3

"TO claim one victory inspired, to win just once is their desire", the words of a famous Saw Doctors song that spring to mind after Killeen’s on-pitch celebrations on a cold, wet and windy December Sunday afternoon in Stradbally.

Killeen ladies came away with their first ever football title, the Senior ‘B’ League. The new team on the block were convincing winners by five points, and in so doing, made their mark in ladies football in Laois.

R and C Gaels shouldn’t take too much disappointment away from this game as they were crowned junior champions earlier in the year and make the step up to inter-mediate next year.

The weather conditions were less than appealing for a game of football and this contributed to ensuring this was a low scoring game. Both teams stuck it out, however, and battled away gallantly until the final whistle.

Although Killeen did look to have a comfortable lead on the final scoreboard, it was hard come by and it wasn’t until the last few minutes of injury time that they ensured themselves of a victory.

Emma Hosey got the first score of the game, a point for Killeen, in the 11th minute.

Four minutes later Killeen corner forward Leona Kelly, sent the ball to the right hand side of the net, after attacking a few times with less positive results. This goal gave Killeen a boost and their lead was extended by Rhona Julian who tapped over a free shortly after.

R and C Gaels weren’t going to let these scores go unanswered however. Hannah Russell was on target with a free for her side on 17 minutes but this was to be their only score of the opening half.

Alice Malone split the posts for Killeen to make the score at half-time 1-3 to 0-1 in her side’s favour.

But if Killeen had any notions this was going to be a cakewalk they got a wake up call straight from the restart. R and C Gaels got the dream start they wanted for the second half when Róisín Poole rattled the net after just 90 seconds.

This score reawakened Killeen and Rhona Julian answered with a good individual point.

However the R and C Gaels defence was working really hard, making life very difficult for their opponents. In particular Ann Flanagan and Ciara O’Donovan did some great hassling.

But at the other end they were not getting the scores. A goal chance skinned the posts while another four shots on goal in the first nine minutes of the second half produced nothing in the way of scores.

After all of this target practise Hannah Russell showed that she had no problems finding the posts when she sent a high ball from outside of the 21 metre line between the posts.

Great defending from Aisling Wall in the Killeen half-back line was paying off. Rhona Julian popped over another point for Killeen.

With more than 12 minutes of ordinary time to go and a goal between the teams, Killeen didn’t feel safe yet though and R and C Gaels weren’t far behind.

Hannah Russell pointed a free for R and C Gaels and the gap narrowed to just two points.

But all hopes of a comeback were quashed a minute into injury time when Avril Kelly’s free lobbed into the back of the net to the surprise of the crowd and the delight of Killeen.

SCORERS Killeen: Avril Kelly 1-0 (f), Leona Kelly 1-0, Rhona Julian 0-3, Alice Malone, Emma Hosey 0-1 eachy. R and C Gaels: Róisín Poole 1-0, Angelina Rigney 0-3 (2f),

KILEEN: Paula Kennedy; Niamh Brophy, Grace Miller, Paula McDonald; Catherine Stynes, Aileen Langton, Aisling Wall; Bláthnaid Wall, Andrea Burke; Alice Malone, Martina Phelan, Emma Hosey; Avril Kelly, Rhona Julian, Leona Kelly. Subs: Eimear Connolly for Paula McDonald (35 mins), Clodagh Healy for Niamh Brophy (43 mins), Sarah Hosey for Avril Kelly (63 mins).
