AGM calls for a return to Junior A
Our AGM was held recently and a lively meeting discussed a range of topics. A crowd of approx. 35 were in attendance with some new and not so new faces contributing. One of the key decisions discussed was whether or not to remain in the intermediate championship for 2009. This issue generated a lot of debate and a vote was taken the majority of the attendance decided that in light of the fact that so many players were leaving the panel in 2009 for various reasons it would be better to enter the Junior A championship.
For a list of the incoming officers see the "club officers" link on the football page.
Lads heading down under
Best of luck to all the lads heading down under to get a bit of sunshine in 2009. Contrary to reports they are not a delegation sent out to bring Arnie home. Hope to see you all back ready for action in 2010.
Match reports from the 2008 season;
Barrowhouse bow of the championship
Barrowhouse bowed out of this years intermediate championship but can hold their heads high after a spirited performance against Portlaoise last night (Aug 20). For those who wondered if we could compete at this level there was plenty of evidence to show that indeed we could. The team as a whole improved their overall performance and were unlucky not to have come away with a win, a point which was also made by some of the Portlaoise followers.
Roger Grufferty set the tone early with some thundering tackles and worked tirelessly to gain posession. He was well supported by midfield, Mikey Langton at centre back and also James O'Meara and Martin Murphy in the half forward line. However an extra bit of composure in front of goals on a few occasions would probably have seen us through, as a number of chances went a begging in the first half.
With the scores tied at 0-3 each at half time a goal was always going to be crucial. Unfortunately it fell to Portlaoise when a misplaced clearance was dispatched past a helpless Karl. This was to prove to be the crucial score in very tight second half. Portlaoise ran out winners on a score line of 1-6 to 0-5.
Apart from those already mentioned others who shone were the full back line who were very tight all game, Joe Murphy worked hard but was the attention of most of the Portlaoise defence.
Team;
Karl Fitzgerald, Tom McDonald, Kevin Phelan, Tom Page, Mike Murphy, Mikey Langton, Shay Phelan, James Malone, Sean Langton, Martin Murphy, Roger Grufferty, James O'Meara, Kevin Langton, Joe Murphy, Stevie Langton. Subs Paul Kenny, Mark O'Donoghue, Kieran Murphy, Sean O'Keefe, Declan Keville, Willie Holligan,
Junior c's draw again
Junior C Semi-final; Barrowhouse 1-11 Ballyfin 1-11(AET)
What a game! This game had everything comebacks, great scores, controversy, tension and extra-time. Full credit to both teams on what was a tight and skillful played in a good sporting manner. Ballyfin got off to a flyer and were 1-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. However Barrowhouse rallied for the rest of the first half and a point from James O’Meara followed by 1-1 from “young” Mike Brennan had the teams level at half time. The second half was a tight affair with the lead changing hands on several occasions, however Barrowhouse seemed to be on course for victory when Kieran Murphy and Declan Keville kicked Barrowhouse two points in front with five minutes to go. However back came Ballyfin and when a shot that seemed to be heading to the net went over the bar questions were asked if indeed the ball had gone through the net. After a few minutes consultation a point was awarded which left a point between the teams which Ballyfin duly scored from the kick out.
So for the second time in a week Barrowhouse were into extra time. Ballyfin again got off to a flyer but a point from a sideline by Sparks leveled the game again. But anything Sparks could do Ballyfin could do also when another point from a sideline had the visitors one up at the break. Both teams understandably were now very tired and it was no surprise that the only score of the second half was the equalizer by Mike Brennan to bring his tally to 1-3. The replay will be in Ballyfin on Tuesday 22 July at 7.30.
Barrowhouse team:
Shay O’Halloran- what a great save in the second half
Kevin Langton- Great second half worked tirelessly

Marty Murphy- Worked his socks off
Malone and Sparks – Great battling in the middle of the park
Martin Langton – great point worked tirelessly
Kieran Murphy – vital score near the end
James O’Meara – Man of the match
Mike Brennan – not bad for a young fella
John Wallace – fought hard but things just didn’t happen
Declan Keville – worked hard, vital score at the end
Subs;
Charlie Dunne- cool as a breeze on the ball
Joe Dunne- strange to see him taken off
Garry Howe- had little to do, good kick outs
Touch – great to see him back.
Junior C's win replay

New Jerseys
Many thanks to John Wallace for presenting the club with a new set of jerseys for 2008. Not only does he give us some new team wear but he also chips in with the odd score as well. Well done John keep up the good work.
Barrowhouse overcome St. Josephs in tight Div. 2 clash
Barrowhouse claimed their first league points with a hard fought win over St. Josephs last night. The home team got off to a good start and were two points up early however Barrowhouse gradually got into the game with Joe Murphy proving to be a good target at full forward. Two points from Shay Phelan and points from Sparks and Stevie had Barrowhouse leading by 0-4 to 0-3 at the break. Stevie again scored a great point early in the second half to open up a two point lead. However St. Josephs gradually began to dominate around the middle of the park with Nigel Brennan and Cathal George doing some great work and Liam Stapleton having a great battle with Smiler at full forward. Barrowhouse's defence stood firm until ten minutes from the end when St. Josephs eventually took a one point lead. Barrowhouse struck back immediately when a shot by Emmet Malone was dropped over the line by the keeper. St. Josephs struck back immediately but a further point from Sparks ensured the victory despite a late point from the hosts. Final score Barrowhouse 1-7 St. Josephs 0-9.
Tough draw for Intermediate championship
Barrowhouse have been drawn in group 1 of the Intermediate championship alongside Courtwood, Portlaoise and Ballinakill.
Group 2 consists of Park Ratheniska, Kilcavan, Annanough and Ballyroan Abbey.
Barrowhouse comeback falls short
Courtwood 2-11 Barrowhouse 1-11
To all who watched this game it looked as if Barrowhouse were in danger of getting a serious beating when at half time we trailled by 2-8 to 0-3 having gifted courtwood two soft goals. However in the second half aided by a slight breeze Barrowhouse gradually chipped away at the lead and also held Courtwood to three points for the period. With less than five minutes to go Barrowhouse still trailed by six points however Stevie Langton converted a penalty to leave just a goal between the teams. The Courtwood keeper was called into action again with a minute on the clock when saving from sub Declan Keville. Courtwood held on for the victory but were made to sweat in the final few moments. Stevie Langton was Barrowhouse's man of the match scoring 1-9 in all as he gave a near faultless display of free taking.
